Your Website Looks Fine – But These 4 Site Hurting Things Are Wrecking Your Results

Let me guess – you’ve done all the things. You’ve built the site, done the branding, maybe even invested in SEO or ads… but the leads just aren’t coming through. You may have done some site hurting things that leads to your leads dropping.

And someone’s told you the answer is simple: you just need more traffic.

I’m here to tell you that’s rubbish.

In 9 out of 10 cases, it’s not the traffic that’s the problem. It’s what happens after someone lands on your site.

And I see it all the time – websites that look fine on the surface, but there’s hidden friction underneath. Tiny things that quietly kill conversions. And those little things? They can be the reason an A-grade client chooses your competitor instead.

I’ll walk you through the four biggest conversion killers I see shortly, but before we get to that, we’ve got to zoom out for a second.

Because if you don’t understand what’s actually happening in the mind of the person landing on your site, you’ll keep guessing… and losing.

What’s Actually Going On When Someone Lands on Your Website

It’s easy to think someone clicks through and just decides to enquire – job done. But that’s not how it works.

Actually, most people are preparedly cautious and guarded.

Even if they were referred to you, even if they like what they see, they’re still sussing you out, asking themselves, “Is this right for me? Can I trust this? Is now the right time?”

And if your website doesn’t answer those questions fast, with clarity, trust, and direction, they’re gone.

That’s why we don’t build websites with a one-track mindset.

You’ve got to meet people where they’re at.

And that means keeping these two critical things in mind:

  1. People are at different stages of the journey
Some are ready to go. Others are still comparing, reading, or just checking you out. If your site only speaks to the hot buyers, you’ll miss the ones who just needed a bit more time.
  2. Introverts vs extroverts
Not everyone wants to jump on a call. Some want to browse quietly, click a button, or read something first. If your only option is “Call Now,” you’re cutting out a big chunk of people who might’ve said yes, but in their own way.

Bottom line: Your website needs to meet people where they’re at, and guide them in a way that makes sense for them.

When that’s not happening, it usually comes down to one of four things.

These are the friction points I see on websites every week that quietly lose you leads you’ve already paid for, without you even realising.

Conversion Killer #1: Confusing Layout or Navigation

Most people land on a site and just don’t know what to do. There’s no clear flow. They’ve almost got their arms crossed, like, ‘Go on then, impress me.’ But instead of guiding them, the site just… sits there.

What to do instead:
Make it dead simple for people to understand what you do and how to take the next step. Use clear headlines, strong subheadings, and a logical page flow that guides the eye. Group similar content together, keep the menu clean, and make sure every page answers three questions fast: Who’s this for? What do they do? What’s next?

If someone can get that in under 8 seconds, you’re on the right track.

Conversion Killer #2: Poor Copy That Doesn’t Speak to Humans

I see websites all the time dripping in corporate waffle, all “we provide innovative solutions” and other meaningless fluff. And honestly? No one knows what that actually means.

What to do instead:
Speak like a human. Write your copy the same way you’d explain things to a client face-to-face. Keep it clear, specific, and benefit-focused. And most importantly, ditch the buzzwords – no one’s Googling “scalable integrated solutions.”

Instead, answer the real questions they’re asking: Can you help me? Do you get my problem? What happens next?

If your copy builds trust and clarity, your website will start doing its job properly.

Conversion Killer #3: Slow Load Times

If your site takes too long to load, most people won’t wait around. They’ll bounce before you even get a chance to show them what you do. The worst part? You usually don’t even know it’s happening. Because no one’s going to message you saying, “Hey, just letting you know, I left your site because it took too long to load.”

They’ll just bounce… and you’ll never hear from them.

What to do instead:
Run a quick speed test on your site with a free tool like GTmetrix or Google PageSpeed Insights. If things are slow, start with the basics:

  • Compress your images (especially big banner photos)
  • Clean up any clunky animations or third-party scripts
  • Remove plugins you’re not using
  • And for the love of leads, host with someone decent

Conversion Killer #4. Calls to Action That Ask Too Much, Too Soon

You’ve seen it before: the big, bold “Book a Free Strategy Session” button plastered all over the homepage.

Now, that might work for someone who’s ready to go. But for everyone else? It’s a bit much. Especially if they’ve only just found you. Most websites try to close too hard, too fast. But the best ones know: not everyone’s ready to jump straight in. Sometimes, you need a softer step that builds trust without pressure.

What to do instead:
Make it easier for people to say yes. Offer low-commitment options that still move them forward, like a free guide, a short quiz, or a quick contact form that doesn’t feel like a full application.

The key is to match the ask to where they’re at. If someone’s just sussing you out, they’re far more likely to click “Learn More” than “Let’s Talk.”

These are the little things that slip through the cracks, but they make all the difference.

Because even if your offer’s great and your service is spot on, none of that matters if people don’t stick around long enough to see it.

Turns Out, More Traffic Was Never the Answer

You’ve already done the hard work to get people to your site. Now it’s about making sure they don’t bounce before they ever become a lead.

And when you know what to look for, including the friction, dead ends, and the silent deal-breakers, it gets a whole lot easier to fix.
